Let’s Talk Human Skills

It’s no secret that human skills are the key to better work and happier workplaces; and learning how to improve them shouldn’t be a secret, either.

Human skills are the key to workplace success

In all of my jobs over the years (and I had 16 in 16 of them!) I noticed something that got my researcher senses tingling: the people who got furthest in their respective companies and careers weren’t necessarily the best at their job technically, they were the best at the human side of it.

This wasn’t just true for the roles I worked in, from working on Netflix content to presenting on stages across the globe. It was true across all industries, all companies, all levels.

But despite how vital they were to both personal and business success, I curiously couldn’t find anywhere for people to learn how to improve these human skills. In 2023, I officially put the years I’d spent meticulously documenting, observing, researching and developing human skills into practice – and Let’s Talk Human Skills was born.

So what are the human skills?

There are 7 core human skills that are essential in the workplace:

Confidence: in yourself and your ideas

Emotional Intelligence: being able to navigate emotional complexity

Communication: being able to express yourself clearly and handle difficult conversations

Collaboration: because very little work happens in a silo

Relationship Building: to open doors and make the work environment enjoyable

Ideation: independent thinking and critical evaluation

Adaptability: when you can deal with uncertainty and bounce back from setbacks
